Publisher giant Activision Blizzard has released first day sales figures for the latest in the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. They sold 6.5 million units for a gross of over $400m in 24 hours since release. The record was preivously held by another game in the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which grossed $310 million in the 24 hours since release.

The Call of Duty franchise has now set the opening sales record for three years straight now, as the aforementioned record holder Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was from 2009, and was then followed by Call of Duty: Black Ops in 2010. Investors should be pleased with the sales figures, as Activision Blizzard (Nasdaq: ATVI) stock went up to $12.79 after dropping 1% at market close on the Friday of release.

The news shouldn't be too surprising, considering the reported number of pre-orders, but the franchise has proven very successful so far in its yearly release schedule and that looks to continue for now. Day one sales of course doesn't answer the question of whether the game is actually good or not, but most full reviews are generally favorable even if the metacritic user score appears low.

I'm a BF3 player, with about 50h ingame time. IMO, battlelog and origin are a pain, but a workable pain.

Yes origin needs to be running to launch the game. Pretty much like steam needs to be running to launch a steamworks game. Other then that, origin won't bother you. Well, that and adding friends to origin because you can import friends from origin in BF3 and i imagine it'll be like that for other origin games. Which is kinda a hassle.

Battlelog has a few major cons. For one, it takes much longer to load up a game. The game loads fast - as they said. But they left out that battlelog also has: Logging in....Connecting.... Joining Server.... Loading... Then it pops into the game, loads some more... Then a black screen with a blue flashing square... and then the deploy screen.

Also, the server browser doesn't load all servers. You have to scroll to the bottom of the page, it'll load some more, repeat 4x, then go back to the top of the page since the newly loaded servers won't be sorted in any way, so you have to sort for players/ping etc. This has basically deteriorated to buttonmashing End untill it loads no more, then press Home to get back to the top. The resulting time spent often means you can forget about joining 63/64 player servers. By the time your able to click on the server in the list somebody will have magically taken that spot. It does refresh the server instantly when you click on it, but honestly ingame browsers did that too.

All in all i just end up playing longer on the same server. In which case the game does load fast and i'm not bothered by origin or battlelog at all.

The biggest problems of BF3 aren't origin or battlelog. It's the fact that i can get very few kills in jets, because when they get disabled the pilots tend to jump out, getting me points for destroying the vehicle but not killing the driver(s). Or the fact that i've got the MBT autoloader upgrade, spent a slugging match with another tank putting 7 (!) rounds directly into him at full-auto, and still not killing him because there are just 2 repair guys behind him which i can't hit from that angle, and i lose because i've only got 1 repair guy behind me and could take only 6 hits (lol).

Or the fact that Infantry, mobile AA, MBT's, attack heli, scout heli and jets *all* get stingers and aircraft get 1 flare every 10 seconds. Or the fact that you can laser paint a chopper and shoot a guided missle at it (which jets, scout and attack heli, IFV's, engineers, MBT's also all get) which ignore flares.

...that COD has room to grow. Not all of the purchasers are previous gamers of the franchise. Of course the game is boring ever since the first MW. But for a fresh player that has no clue of the history of the game, it represents a marvel. We are too spoiled by great games(from a technical standpoint) that we are bored of "rehashes". When I was young the nascent FPS genre was pretty slim in representations. I had Q1,Hexen,Blood...but besides the Q1 frag fest there were not many choices. Now you can grab MW1, hell one of those tactical Ubisoft shooters, and marvel at the quality of the visuals and gameplay. If those reviewers somehow could reset their previous COD experience they would appreciate what they have in front of them.

Sadly, they broke the solid matchmaking code from previous COD titles while doing MW3. There are hordes of players outside US which are facing issues while trying to get a match going. The game tries to pair people from one country together, which is not a bad thing but then it does not pair them in worldwide games. This leaves players stranded if not enough matches are going on in their country. So far, I have had only been able to play online three four times even when there are a million online! This issue has been there since about a week now, without any fix in the news. This can be a significant deal breaker for this title.

"There are hordes of players outside US which are facing issues while trying to get a match going"

I always thought it just polled for ping time. Obviously, the better ping times are by people in your getneral region, but if none are available, it finds the next best thing... Unless your ping outside of your region is so bad, that its not letting you join as to not muck it up for the rest of the players on that server.

Maybe its your ISP and/or region's internet infrastructure that is the issue.
