I'd like to see Office for the XBO someday and printer support. That'd take it from an interesting, but unappealing entertainment device to something I'd impulse buy because it could run games and serve a useful purpose.
Well yes, but a PC is a pain in the tail sometimes. Having a controlled hardware platform means you don't have to worry about a host of PC-related problems. Things like meeting system requirements or installing the latest drivers are basically a non-issue. It'd be nice enjoy that far superior experience and get PC-like productivity as well without owning multiple hardware platforms to do it. Given the option, I'd love to have a console with an office suite over fussing with a PC. When I'm at home, the last thing I want to do is sysad my own stuff.
What myriad of driver and other software issues? Unless you're doing something fancy or playing games, you can pretty much buy any decent OEM box and call it a day. Don't install anything outside of the Store if you don't know how to avoid installing malware on accident.
Playing games is the problem. On a PC it's an absurd venture into the idiotic realm of on-going hardware upgrades. Everything from outrageous power supplies to huge, stupid graphics cards have to be acquired piecemeal and cobbled together by someone somewhere and there's still no assurance that the Franken-Space-Heater you purchased or built yourself is going to be sufficient for the next title coming out. Any console offers a promise that a game made for it will run on it and that's a massive advantage over dealing with a PC that makes the whole affair of using a console for games and amusement a far superior experience in terms of reduced hassle and general efficiency. Its a matter of intelligently using your free time for more amusement and less screwing around with the equipment thats supposed to provide it. Sure, modern consoles aren't perfect, but I can't see anyone with half a brain in their head wasting their time trying to play video games on a general purpose PC and expecting a good experience from the ordeal. If tinkering is your thing, then it's fine. Blow some money and knock yourself out, but if you just want your hardware to STFU and run amuse you, then it's the wrong solution to the problem.
Adding an Office suite for productivity purposes would get the XBO into the PC market allowing it to fulfill more than just an entertainment role on a closed system. Yeah, Android is close and can do some of that productivity. Apple computers are a passable alternative, but they're a poor substitute and play a lousy second fiddle in a world dominated by Microsoft and Google. I'd like to support them becuase platform diversity is a good thing in a competitive market, but they haven't had their act together since the Apple IIGS was for sale and they've thrown away the lead they had in the mobile space by failing to innovate past the iPhone 4.
LOL! So much silliness involved in a gaming PC. A proper gaming PC's going to pour out 400~500 watts continuously, cost $1000 or more yearly to keep it fresh, require a consistent amount of effort dealing w/ clocks, hardware issues, and of course software nonsense.
The xbox one just works...for the most part. I don't have to mess with it, it only puts out 125 watts if that at the most. Granted it's not going to be a "perfect" experience, but in my 20 years of PC gaming, I don't think I've ever had a perfect experience.
400 to 500 watts continuously? $1000 or more a year? Effort dealing with clocks? I hope you do not have a technical job. You do not know how to operate a gaming PC at all despite 20 years of PC gaming. Did you ever think things through before trying them?
I have a PlayStation 4, I love it, I know that PC gaming isn't that hard. Get a Ryzen 1600 system with GTX 1070, 8GB of RAM and enjoy!
I resigned my office-job and now I am getting paid £64 hourly. How? I work over internet! My old work was making me miserable, so I was forced to try something different, two years after...I can say my life is changed-completely for the better!
Running games and media apps (VLC, Hulu, etc) *IS* a useful purpose for a lot of users. Just because it isn't appealing enough to you doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it. Also, yes, you described a PC and if you're on a tech site whining about "PC-related problems" I can't help but find that hilarious. What fussing is required? Buy an OEM box with Windows 10, install an adblocker, and yeah the rest is pretty basic for any AT reader.
I've got an Xbone, and it is hands-down one of the worst UIs I've ever used on a higher power device. They keep updating it and its getting tiny baby steps better but good lord is it still bad. Maybe its rose colored glasses, but I don't even remember Win8 being this bad and the 360's interface ABSOLUTELY wasn't this bad.
I don't like the Xbox One UI either. Too many little icons that I can never remember what they associate with. PS4 UI is much cleaner, albeit with a bit more scrolling, but at least it's easy to navigate and find what you're looking for.
I still miss the original 360 UI. They had a basically perfect interface, so they crapped all over it to make it look like Windows (and carve out more space to sell ads), then crapped all over it again to make it look like Windows 8 (and carve out more space to sell ads).
Does this improve the horribly broken instant on? Seems like twice a week I am forced to restart my xbone because when I go to continue playing a game the xbox is completely or mostly frozen.
Why have this 'feature' if it doesn't work right?
Also, why is there no ssd boot/os drive in the next gen? Why must we even have to rely on broken features like instant on anyway? I would think a 32gb ssd wouldn't add that much to the BoM...
"Why have this 'feature' if it doesn't work right?"
because if they keep working on it, one day they will make it right, if they don't do anything, it will never be. Not all things are perfect the day it was born.
I would bet most XB1 users don't have such major issues with instant on. Maybe some games/apps you're using are leaking memory? I don't have to restart mine that often. When I was playing Fallout 4 regularly it seemed like I had to restart a bit more often and/or force close the game and reload it.
Regarding the SSD, the answer to almost every question about a design decision is 'they focus tested it, and people didn't care about the feature you want' OR 'it costs more than you think/it doesn't provide the benefit you think it does'.
I wasn't trying to be snarky, sorry it kind of reads like that.
More pins is great but I want the ability to categorize my pins like in the Win10 start menu ie media, FPS, racing, puzzle apps etc instead of one monolithic block
ARGH. I'd normally be all over preordering an X, but I'm still not finished playing my LAST gen games, and then want to play through my PS4 exclusives on a Pro, and THEN I'll finally get an X LOL

Maybe my sarcasm detector is broken and you are saying this tongue-in-cheek, but I believe what you are describing is called a PC.BrokenCrayons - Monday, October 16, 2017 - link
