Stay away from Toshiba. I thought they are making good drives. But when my NAS class (one of their first 3.5", 2014) with 3 years warranty died, they said they don't stock that model anymore and will issue me debit card against receipt. Great I said. Well, the card arrived without the tax value I paid. That's $10 + $12 for shipping or about 20% of the drive value. When I ask them why - they had no comment. Never ever Toshiba again.

I've never heard of any other company refunding sales tax or shipping in a warranty refund in lieu of replacement before.

Consider yourself lucky that you got a full refund of the purchase price. The standard industry practice seems to be sending you a refub drive, even if your drive fails on first use.

For a refund, I'd even have expected they'd pro-rate it based on the % of warranty used. That you got even 80% of your original out-of-pocket expense is pretty amazing.

Wow, I never head of ATA Streaming Commands, although it seems they've been around for more than a decade. I'm skeptical how useful they are, aside from the ability for reads to complete even in the presence of errors.
