The new Nano looks cool, still priced to high for an impulse buy tho, and the constantly changing form factor means you can never get too attached to whatever you're getting this generation, hehe. 30 hours of music playing battery life on something that small and thin is impressive tho... Sounds kinda run of the mill until you compare it to a 15hr Clip Zip or even a touch from a few gen ago (also 30).

Yeah, it gives me the impression that Apple really doesn't know what it wants the Nano to be.

Making the Nano bigger , almost twice the size is not a good idea. Letting it play video is also a stupid idea. The Gen 4 did this and has a neat camera as well although it was too heavy!.

I do not mind making the Nano 50% thicker for the battery to support Blue tooth. Maybe also put a GPS chip in it for the Sports fan. Playing video is real dumb for a 2 inch screen. The Gen6 nano is almost perfect except for bluetooth support!.

Does the new iPod Nano have wifi? It would be much more useful with wifi for automatic download of podcasts.

Bluetooth and a pedometer, didn't see any mention of Wifi.

I was interested in the Nano for a few minutes before realizing the last gen 16GB Touch is being sold for just 50 bucks more, even if you just use it for music and video the Touch is more capable, plus it has wifi for streaming.

Even a Nexus 7 or Fire HD is only $50 more... I like the Nano too, and $150 isn't a ton of money, but I can't bring myself to pay that for a media player these days.

New iPod nano looks an awful lot like the Nokia 920...
  • Old_Fogie_Late_Bloomer - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

"...though with design language along the same lines as the Nokia 920..."

    Fixed... ;-)

I would go so far as to say the already out 900 (and down). I saw that in the live blog, immediately pulled out my Lumia and thought to myself: wait a second...

With a lot of the other added features in the mix and it's starting to sound like my Zune HD. FM, in an Apple product?
  • guidryp - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

    Seriously? Born yesterday?

The Lumias came out AFTER various iPod Nano/Mini generations that had that design language years before.

    All of these:

    Came before these:

The New Nano pretty clearly follows the design language of the previous Nanos that came before any of the Lumias.

But yes Lumias do look at lot like that were inspired by iPod Mini/Nano.

Why is the 4th Gen iPod touch listed as having 512MB of LPDDR1? I thought it only had 256MB, but it may have been upgraded to 512MB with the release of the white bezel-ed update. I seem to remember someone's white iTouch being a bit smoother in the landscape Music app.
  • dillonnotz24@aol.com - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

It's battery capacity is off too...

    Should be 3.44 Whr, right?

If it had nearly the same battery capacity as the 4S, it ought to be a lot larger!

Personally I'm impressed they are able to fit a 5MP camera with autofocus in a 6.1mm enclosure. I'd be interested in seeing how that looks on teardown. The iPod Touch also finally gains an IPS screen with oleophobic coating like the iPhone and iPad rather than just a bare TN panel.
  • GTRagnarok - Thursday, September 13, 2012 - link

Is it official that it's IPS though?
  • ltcommanderdata - Thursday, September 13, 2012 - link

    http://www.apple.com/ipod-touch/specs.html

It says so on the specs page:

"4-inch (diagonal) widescreen display with Multi-Touch IPS technology"

I remember how amazed I was when they first launched the ipod Touch with Retina display. I never got around buying it, but I felt Apple "has it" :) That device was a bold statement - we can get you where no man has gone before :)

This iteration of the ipod is "the best ever", but I couldn't be more unimpressed. I feel this is the beginning of the end for Apple. It's a nice device, but in 2012 at $300 you have significantly better options - from the cheap Nexus or Amazon tablets, the great Nexus phone, maybe some used Galaxy Notes, or maybe even the upcoming Android cameras. I'm sure they'll sell some, make some money of it, but for the first time in the last five years they were clearly beaten out of a market segment.

Everyone I know who owns an iPhone or iPod touch has it in a case or uses some sort of rubber "bumber". The iPhone is so expensive and can be broken so easily. Maybe their are people out there who don't, but from my observations they are the minority. Once you put it in the case all that beautiful workmanship that Steve Jobs was so keen on suddenly disappears. My wife is a field biologist who is constantly in the field so she keeps her iPhone in a big, ugly (but very effective) Otterbox case.

    Just seems a waste.

These babies sell very well during the holidays as many kids get them. They're better than Nintendo 3DS because they have more utility and cheaper and more variety games on App Store than Nintendo's game library.

A lot of adults who own Android also buy the Touch because Android really does not have a good music management system or software.

I'm getting one because my Galaxy S3 sucks at games and the music audio quality is not up to par with iOS devices.
  • JohnJackson - Saturday, September 15, 2012 - link

I was thinking of that too. Galaxy S3 + new iPod Touch = Killer combo.
  • an1990 - Monday, September 17, 2012 - link

The A4 used in ipod touch 4g was under clocked at 600MHz not at 800MHz as mentioned above!
  • an1990 - Monday, September 17, 2012 - link

my bad.. i think i got it wrong.
