Why would you consider it a joke? Is Anandtech not adequately large/have enough staff to cover both the Apple press conference and the IDF keynote this morning? As said, it's rather disappointing for a technology website to ignore a major event just because Apple has something scheduled at basically the same time.
Because every time Anandtech posts anything about Apple someone proclaims their displeasure in near hysterical tones. Having said that, I am surprised that Anand AND Brian were at this event - I would've expected Anand to be at IDF unless he knew something that we didn't.
it is all cool & All but why is it that when there is an Apple event you do a minute by minute event update but when other companies have their events we are lucky to get maybe 5 to 10 postings & then the coverage stops. But for this we already have had probably 12 to 15 event updates covering each & every other minute. I really like Anandtech and all but lets give every body the same coverage please. Just some food for thought.
Because Apple is an American company, so a U.S.-centric website will naturally be more interested in that.
Second, Apple is Apple. It has a reputation for pushing boundaries. I think thus far that iPhone5S is a bigger leap than many thought. The internals look much better than expected. People talked about 30% increase, now it's 2x. The Camera looks simply stunning and what it takes looks even better. The TouchID(which I'm not sold on) is a pretty bold move.
iOS7 launch. And so on. It's pretty warranted.
If only Apple had launched a 4.5" inch product or higher, I'd considered buying one. Sadly, as long as they make phones for women and small children, I'll stick with Android. But still! I think Apple will do better than many think.
I am sorry that the only reasonably sized phone anymore is too small for you. I am 6' tall and think that 4" is a great size for the screen. Any larger and it inhibits free motion within fashionably cut pants due to my athletic build (I am not talking skinny jeans here - just sharp looking pants and shorts).
Drinking the Apple-Koolaid again? "Up to 2X"....so in 'some task' they managed to get a 2x performance increase. What was the average? For all we know, it could be a 30% increase on average, in which case your point is....well....wrong.
For what it's worth, it was another 'meh' launch. The things that did catch my eye, such as 64-bit, really mean absolutely nothing at this moment in time unless the 5S comes with 4GB of ram. Since I'm fairly certain it doesn't, it really doesn't do much in the overall scheme of things. The camera might look slightly nicer, but it's not enough to compel me to pay $300 more than the high end Android I would like which has other better features.
I still don't understand why Apple would want to imitate Microsoft's failed brutalist UI design. Give me shaded, textured icons and skeuomorphism any day.
That makes no sense. I highly doubt apple even changed their 1gig of ram from the 5, more RAM wastes power in mobile devices. 64 bit word length will be faster regardless of how much RAM the device has. I suggest you read up on what 64 bit word length actually is before making judgement calls.
what is the big deal with the qualcomm sensor fusion chip and now the apple sensor fusion chip. didnt the software APIs already allow access to all the data? who cares if its all in one chip (from the app perspective)
I think the #1 reason for the M7 is so the A7 chip can go into really deep sleep to save power, while a very small and efficient M7 chip is awake and tracking GPS and motion. Sounds perfect for the Strava and Cyclemeter apps, not to mention all the other basic step tracker type apps. However I listen to Pandora over LTE at the same time, so it may not help me much more than on my iPhone 5.
Pricing is outrageously ridiculous. "Budget' 5c is more expensive than HTC One? "Mainstream" 5s the same price as Note 3? Why on the earth people are still buying iPhones? Status quo?
The "budget" model is the 4s. Apple doesn't serve the truly cheap market, for better or worse. Besides given these are contract prices I don't see most people sweating over $100 on a $1400+ bill. But hey it's just easier to assume people are dumb instead of valuing different things.
I got a question what about the screen on the iPhone 5S unless I missed it in the blog here I dont see Apple mention the screen or Resolution. Surely to god they made it a bigger screen & at least match the current phones on the market from android if not what good is all this hardware if your eyes bleed every time you look at it.
Not that I was trying to be rude or nasty about the screen comment but I myself had to setup a iPhone 5 for the mother in law on her wireless & wow that was nasty typing on that screen my fingers were to big for the letters to hit them properly. Apple really needs to up their game when it comes to their screens because size does matter in this case.
I was hoping for a bump to the 4.5" range. I use an iPhone 5 (work) and a Nexus 4 (personal) all day every day. I still hate basic tasks like typing and browsing on the iPhone. I don't need a gargantuan phone, but I have a feeling even Apple will make at least one more bump up in the next generation or two.
I think I'm most disappointed in the price of the 32GB iPhone 5C and the memory sizes on the 5S. Was really hoping for Apple switch to the $50/size system instead of $100/size: the 32G 5C should have been $149. Then the 5S should have been $199 for 32G, $299 for 64G and $399 for 128G.
You and the 6 other people who pre-ordered can enjoy your phones without potential government snooping. Because the Dilbert cartoon you just emailed to your coworker and the picture of pickles you just texted your wife from the grocery store are incredibly interesting to the NSA. Or you could just buy a Nexus 4 for half the price and use AOSP...
And you know Jolla doesn't have a hardcoded backdoor how? Everything I've read suggested the NSA in no way limited their efforts to suborn companies and/or their employees to just the US.
Twice I've found phones on the side of road in my neighborhood, from people who left them on their car and drove off. In both cases I was able to get into the phone and make a few calls, and eventually return the phone to their owners. If they had passwords or fingerprint scanners, they would have never gotten their phone back, as AI had to look at a few contacts and make a few calls. One was an iPhone 3GS (new a the time) and a more recent phone was a Samsung SIII. The iPhone was run over by a car, and still worked great - just cracked a plastic cover case it had on it. So if you do keep your phone passworded, you might want to keep it in a case, and have your name and phone number written inside the case. It will greatly increase the chances of getting you phone back if you lose it.
My Samsung Galaxy S 3 has my name and email address posted on the lock screen. I don't know why they just can't do that, especially for the S3 you recovered.
"We finally have a way to directly send files between two iOS devices on the same WiFi network"
This kinda misses the point. AirDrop does NOT require a pre-existing WiFi network, it creates one on the fly. This is the primary reason that it only works on some iOS devices, not all --- it needs devices with chips that can create an ad hoc network.
Also I'm wondering that if they were in fact going after the chinese/indian/african markets with the 5C whether they spec'd it too high. To anyone other than Beijing "sallarymen" the C is still too expensive.
Man I can't believe the excitement over a pretty iterative device, a decent upgrade for sure but you'd think they'd invented a whole new phone and ended hunger for good. Luckily for me and my ballyhooing, they made the devices (mainly the storage upgrades - apple we all know you're putting at least 75% of that extra $100 straight to profit) overpriced so their market share isn't going to be changing any time soon. $550 isn't any more accessible than $750 for most of the world, and if you lived where $550 was a lot, you sure as well wouldn't spend it on a watered down device when you could get a lot more for your money.
Strangely it seems like apple focused a lot on specs that no one else other than tech people will pay attention to and didn't change anything else that is visible to people like screen size - at least offer some choices. Bigger screens have been pulling my friends away from the iPhone. The reason it is strange is that that is usually the critique leveled at android phones.
Also what's the screen rez? After those TFT LCDs on the $1000 air I am very mistrustful of apple especially since this blog didn't mention anything about it and you know if apple had added an extra pixel it'd be the greatest thing in the world on here.
It's soooooo funny that they've been always saying "Spec is nothing" and all they showed off are specs. 64 bit. 12% larger sensor. 10 hour browsing. LOL
I was pleasantly surprised by the move to 64-bit. On MacRumors 2 weeks ago, I discounted that possibility since I didn't think Apple would be that bold. While we don't yet have phones with 4+GB of RAM, by making this move now, at least developers will be ready once phones have that power (probably in a year or two).
Cook is leading Apple to irrelevance. Bean counter arrogance. Embracing the good enough for the masses while the competition's aggressively advancing with much better hardware in every product line except the Ipad. Their "NEW" Macbook pros are seriously under spec'd and under sized, hardly worthy of the PRO label. Cook said last year that"people" don't want larger phones. WRONG! The biggest empirical proof of Apple's decline is the dwindling crowds at their previously jammed stores.
Not everyone wants larger phones. I know many many individuals who would rather go for a smaller size screen including myself. I think 4 inch is plenty. Maybe give the buyers some options but anything larger for me and I would resort to my Ipad.
I have read your blog.I think this is an amazing post about Apples and IPhone. But I have recently read an article about IPhone Killer which also told me something different.
